Colleen Browne M.OMScOsteopathic Manual Medicine |
Hi, I'm Colleen!
I'm a graduate of the comprehensive, four year Osteopathic program at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy in Hamilton, Ontario, and received my M.OMSc (Master of practice in Osteopathic Manipulative Sciences) in October 2015. The M.OMSc program at the CAO has approximately 5000 hours of academic requirements and 1000 hours of practical training requirements and is currently the only Classical Osteopathic school in Ontario. I am an active professional member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association and Canadian Institute of Classical Osteopathy. I am dedicated to finding the root cause of my patients aliments instead of treating the symptoms or effects. I also try to help empower my patients to take control of their health and wholeheartedly encourage a healthy lifestyle both physically and emotionally. Please take a look at my story below about why I decided to become an osteopath. |
My Story: Why I decided to become an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner
Like many others, I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up (even though I was in my early 20's). I held a variety of jobs that payed the bills every month. When I began to work as a receptionist at a local natural health clinic I had no idea what Osteopathy was, but there was a CAO graduate working there. I quickly learned about the potentials of the various natural healing options that were available in the clinic, with one sticking out the most to me: Osteopathy. Being the receptionist, I heard everyone's story about why they needed to visit, and the story I heard again and again was, "I have seen everyone, I have tried everything, and finally osteopathy was able to help me!" I thought wow, I wish I could do that for people; what an amazing practice.
Then came my first treatment. From childhood I had chronic back pain and debilitating migraines. Now that I'm an osteopath, I realize that this was brought on from a bad fall off of a teeter-totter when I was 4 years old. Do you remember how high those things were in the 80's? Anyway, I had been struggling for pretty much my whole life with this. I remember the year I began at the clinic was particularly bad for migraines for me and had a migraine for 2-3 days every week. I was persuaded to get a massage by one of the clinic's RMTs for my back pain, and she was right! I felt amazing that night after the massage! Unfortunately, a day or two later my back pain returned and it seemed to get worse every day for almost a week. I asked the osteopath at the clinic what he thought might be going on. He said that it sounded like the muscles that had been holding and helping to support my spine had let go from my massage. He said after a quick treatment with him it should improve. So I had my first osteopathic treatment and it wasn't at all what I was expecting! It was very gentle and relaxing, and he looked over my whole body, not just the area of concern. I had immediate relief in my back, and within that week I didn't have a single migraine!
I knew then that I really wanted to become an osteopath, but I didn't even know where to start. So I shared my desire with the osteopath at the clinic and he told me about a new program the CAO had been working very hard to get running. This intensive foundation program would allow me to study the required anatomy and physiology at the CAO and prepare me to train as an osteopath. He warned me that it would be tremendously difficult and that I shouldn't be surprised if I didn't make it through the program! That fall, after completing the application process and being accepted to the school and the foundation program, I started my journey to become an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner.
After four incredible years, the hard work, late nights and tears have paid off because my patients are now saying to me "I've gone everywhere, I've tried everything and finally osteopathy, you, have helped me and changed my life! Thank you!"
